WHY AND WHEN DOES A HORSE NEED OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT

As an owner or rider it is very important to know why a horse or pony displays a change in attitude. Animals do not speak our language, but have their own form of self expression ultimately telling us more than we think. It is up to us to learn to recognise their communication appeals and to react accordingly. Equine osteopathy tries to reestablish equilibrium lost by the body due to many reasons. Here are some examples:

  • a decrease of performance

  • a sprain, fall or other traumatization

  • viscera problems in metameric relation with the vertebral column through the nervous system

  • a decrease in mobility or associated pain with movement

  • pain and stiffness

  • resistance to the bit

  • refusal to perform required exercises

  • ...

These are undoubtably some well known scenarios to horsemen. Osteopathy is a recognised and established system of diagnosis and treatment which places emphasis on the structural, cranio-sacral and visceral integrity of the body. While sharing many similarities with conventional assessment and diagnosis of veterinary medicine it offers a holistic complementary alternative.
